Yesterday, we heard about three more plagues God sent because of Pharaoh’s stubbornness:  A plague against livestock, boils, and hail.  Let’s continue in Exodus chapter 10.

Reflection Questions

  1. Recap the story in your own words.
  2. We’ve been through 9 plagues:  The Nile turned to blood, Frogs came up from the waters, Gnats came up from the dust of the earth, Flies attacked the Egyptians, a plague killed Egyptian livestock, festering boils irritated and tortured the Egyptians, hail destroyed everything belonging to the Egyptians, locusts devoured all the Egyptian crops, and a thick darkness covered the land.  What does Pharaoh’s refusal to surrender, to listen to Moses’s counsel, and to save his people and his land, tell you about who he is?
  3. Has your stubbornness towards God or others led you on a path of destruction?  How do you think you need to respond?

Yesterday, after spending 7 days with bloody water, Moses and Aaron go before Pharaoh to see if he had reconsidered.  He refuses and the second plague begins:  Frogs were in their bedrooms, beds, ovens, food, and on their person.  Let. That. Sink. In.  Understandably, Pharaoh begs Moses and Aaron to take away the frogs and says he will let God’s people go.  But once relief came, he refused, so they sent the 3rd plague:  Gnats.  Let’s continue the story in Exodus chapter 9.

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you learn for the first time today?
  2. How do you see God moving and working?  What does that tell you about who he is?
  3. How do you need to respond?

Yesterday,  Moses finally quit arguing with God, and God tells him to go back to Pharaoh.  So, Moses and Aaron  did just that, but God hardened Pharaoh’s heart so that the Egyptians would know that He was Yahweh.  Through Moses and Aaron, God inflicted the first plague on Egypt:  He turned the Nile into blood.  The Nile was a source of life to the Egyptians.  They worshipped it, but it became an instrument of death.  Let’s see what happens next in Exodus chapter 8.

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you see God doing in this passage?
  2. As I read, did anything surprise you?  What jumped out at you?
  3. Use these next few minutes to ask God how you should respond.

In our last episode, God responded to Moses’s frustration.  Things were worse for the Hebrews than they had been before Moses was sent to rescue them.  So, God gave Moses a message for his people, but they were too discouraged to believe it.  Can you relate?  I know I sure can.  Let’s see what happens next in Exodus chapter 7.

Reflection Questions

  1. What stood out to you in today’s passage?
  2. How does this passage point to Jesus?
  3. Who do you relate to most in this chapter?  How should you respond?

Last week, we caught up with the Israelites from where we left off in Genesis.  Four hundred years had gone by and much of what Joseph did was forgotten.  For a refresher on his story, take a listen to episodes 41-50.

Anyway….The new Pharaoh in charge now, feared the Israelites because of how fruitful they had become,  so he oppressed them and made their lives miserable.  But this didn’t surprise God – and it shouldn’t have surprised his people – because God told Abraham in Genesis 15 verses 13 and 14 that his descendants would be strangers in a foreign land where they would be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.  After 400 years, God would punish the nation that enslaved them and in the end they would come away with great wealth.

Monday and Tuesday’s episodes last week found us smack in the middle of that prophecy.  It had been 400 years and God’s people were, indeed, being oppressed just as He promised.  But the promise of Genesis 15 didn’t end with oppression, and that is where Moses’s journey begins.

Moses escaped death as a baby because his mother hid him away in a tiny baby ark in some reeds.  Found and adopted by Pharaohs’ daughter, Moses was brought up in a place where he saw those like Him being beaten and mistreated.  Even at a young age, Moses was compelled to set his people free, but his time had not yet come, and he ended up fleeing to the wilderness after killing a man.  But God still had plans to use Moses to rescue his people, and that plan was laid out in Friday’s episode.

Let’s continue with the story in Exodus chapter 6.

Reflection Questions

  1. Recap the passage in your own words.
  2. What stood out to you today?
  3. What was God doing in the midst of the doubts?  What was His response?
  4. I’m going to re-read God’s message to Moses and Israel.  If you’re discouraged or broken, if the enemy is coming after you, or if you are weary, hold on to these words:

“I am the Lord. I will free you from your oppression and will rescue you from your slavery in Egypt. I will redeem you with a powerful arm and great acts of judgment. 7 I will claim you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God who has freed you from your oppression in Egypt.”

Yesterday, God called Moses to be the man who would rescue his people from slavery.  But Moses was just like you and me.  He felt ill- equipped for the task and instead of focusing on the miracles of God, he focused on his own-shortcomings and the impossibility of the tasks.  Three times God performs a miracle in front of his eyes., but Moses protests each time.  Even though God was angry at Moses, he does grant him a companion – his brother, Aaron – to make up for all the things Moses thinks he isn’t.

Let’s continue reading in Exodus chapter 5.

Reflection Questions

  1. Recap the story in your own words.
  2. Can you relate to anything in this section?
  3. What do you see God doing?  What does it teach you about who He is?

Sometimes when we are trying to break away from people or things that oppress us, hurt us, or distract us, things get worse and we start to question who God is, His motives, and what He is doing.  It’s important to remember that just like Exodus, the story isn’t over and God’s work and purposes are not either.  Use these next few minutes to ask God to strengthen your faith while His work continues.
