Yesterday, we listened to the blessings Jacob (also known as Israel) bestowed on his sons just before he died.  Today, we’ll say goodbye to him as Joseph and his brothers do the same.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where do you see God working in this chapter?
  2. Even though the brothers had experienced restoration with Joseph, they had not been fully reconciled through forgiveness.  How might this apply to your life?
  3. How should you respond?
  4. Spend the next few minutes reflecting on what you learned about God over these last 10 weeks and thank Him for who He is.

In our last episode, Jacob called for Joseph and his sons to bless them.  Ephraim – despite being the youngest – received a blessing to make him greater than Manasseh.  Today, we’ll see Jacob bless his own sons.  Let’s listen in Genesis chapter 49.

Reflection Questions

  1. A father’s blessing on his children was an important part of Jewish tradition.  Did one particular blessing stand out to you?
  2. How did Israel’s blessings and curses set the stage for what is to come?
  3. Spent time with God asking for his blessing.

Yesterday…Jacob’s family – all 70 of them – went to Egypt.  Joseph meets them in Goshen and he is reunited with his father, Jacob.  It was such a great scene!  One of my favorites.  When we closed, Joseph was going to see Pharaoh to let him know his family had arrived.  Let’s see what happens next in Genesis 47.

Reflection Questions

  1. What stood out to you in this passage?
  2. Ask God what He would like for you to understand.
  3. How do you need to respond?

Over the last month, we’ve heard about the creation story, the fall of mankind, and its continual bend towards corruption.  Despite mankind’s bend toward destruction, we saw Him promise a seed – a man – that would one day crush evil’s head.

The thread of promises continues throughout the book of Genesis.  He also made a covenant with Abraham to give him land and countless descendants that would bless all the inhabitants of the earth.

God’s covenant with Abraham continued through to his son, Isaac, and Isaac’s son, Jacob.  The latter part of Genesis focuses on Jacob’s sons, the devastation they inflicted on their family by selling Joseph into slavery.  Jacob, however, thought Joseph was dead.

Despite the evil his brothers inflicted on him, God gave Joseph wisdom and discernment to set him into a most powerful position in Egypt.  He was in charge of everything – including grain in a time of famine.

When we left Joseph last week, he had just revealed himself to his brothers, Jacob found out he was alive, and Joseph had invited them all to come live in Egypt.  Now, let’s see what happens next in Genesis chapter 46.

Reflection Questions

  1. Recap the story in your own words
  2. What did you see God doing in this chapter?  What does that teach  you about his character?
  3. How do you relate to this story?  How do you need to respond?

Yesterday, Joseph’s brothers left Joseph.  He send back the money again and puts his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack.  Joseph has the brothers arrested and threatens to keep Benjamin as a slave.  Judah pleads with Joseph to stay in Benjamin’s place because it would kill their father.  Let’s see what happens next in Genesis chapter 45.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where do you see God working in this chapter?
  2. Our God is a God of restoration and reconciliation.  Where are you in need of this in your life?  How might this passage give you – or someone you know – hope?
  3. Spend the next few minutes reflecting on what you learned and then  thank Him for who He is.
