Yesterday, we read bout Jacob fleeing from his father-in-law, Laban, and we heard how God’s saw his abuse and confronted Laban about it.  We also saw God meet Jacob again in a dream.  Let’s see what happens next in Genesis chapter 32.

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you see Jacob doing in this chapter?  What state of mind do you think he was in?
  2. Did anything surprise you in this chapter?  What stood out to you?
  3. Is there something you are wrestling about with God?  What can you  glean from this passage?

Over the last month, we’ve heard about the creation story, the fall of mankind, and its continual bend towards corruption.  Despite mankind’s bend toward destruction, we saw Him promise a seed – a man – that would one day crush evil’s head.

The thread of promises continues throughout the book of Genesis.  He also made a covenant with Abraham to give him land and countless descendants that would bless all the inhabitants of the earth.

God’s covenant with Abraham continued through to his son, Isaac and  his wife, Rebecca, and last week we saw that covenant extend to Isaac’s son Jacob.  Last week, Jacob married two sisters:  Leah and Rachel who began having a war to see who could bear the most children.  Twelve sons were born from that battle.  Let’s read some more of their story in Genesis chapter 31.

Reflection Questions

  1. Recap the story in your own words.
  2. How did humans fail?
  3. What did you see God doing in this chapter?  What was his response to human frailty?

Yesterday, we read about the fallout from Jacob’s schemes on his father.  He had tricked him out of the blessing Isaac was going to give his brother, Esau.  So, Jacob was sent east to his relatives in Paddan-Aram to find a wife but also to protect him from the wrath of his brother Esau.  On his way, Jacob had a dream about a stairway to heaven and God appeared to him at the top of the stairs.  He promised Jacob the land he was lying on and descendants as numerous as the stars.  Let’s see what happens next in Genesis chapter 29.

Reflection Questions

1. What other husband and wife met at a well?  Why do  you think the author has two stories with the same setting?

2. How does this story point you to Jesus?

3. Does this story remind you of anything in your own life?  Did you relate to any of the characters?
