We covered some hard ground yesterday when God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for their corruption and listened to a pretty sketchy and uncomfortable story about Lot’s daughters.  Today we see Abraham repeat a sin in his life in Genesis chapter 20.

Reflection Questions

  1. What did you see God doing in this chapter?  Did anything surprise you?   What does it teach  you about His character?
  2. Think about God’s plan and His promise to Abraham.  Why do you think it was important for God to keep Sarah safe?
  3. Does anything remind you of your own life?  Maybe you have a cycle of sin?  Maybe your sin has caused pain to another?  Or maybe you’ve seen God’s hand of protection from someone else’s sin?  Use the next few minutes to thank God or ask for His forgiveness.

Yesterday, three strangers came to meet with Abraham and told them some good – and seemingly impossible – news.  Both Abraham and Sarah laugh at the absurdity of God’s plan, but His plans cannot be thwarted no matter how far-fetched and unlikely they seem.  We can be sure God’s plans include executing judgment on the wicked, but He is merciful not wanting anyone to perish.  Some listeners may find today’s reading disturbing – and rightfully so.  Use your best judgment when allowing children to listen.

Reflection Questions

  1. There are a lot of surprises this chapter.  What in particular stood out to you?
  2. What did you see God doing in this passage?  Where was He just and where was He merciful?
  3. Is there anyone in your life that needs God’s protection?  God hears our intercessions.  Use the next few moments to pray for your loved one.

Yesterday, we saw God come to Abraham 13 years after his son, Ishmael was born.  We saw God give Abram and Sarai new names.  Despite the time that had passed, His promise still stood for Abraham and Sarah to give birth to a son and have many descendants.  Let’s pick up the story in Genesis 18.

Reflection Questions

  1.  Where do you feel like Sarah – worn our, doubtful, and hopeless?
  2. How did God respond to Sarah’s unbelief?
  3. Think back to God and Abraham’s conversation over Sodom & Gomorrah.  What can we learn about prayer through this example?

Yesterday, we got a peek into the insecurities Abram and Sarai were experiencing as they waited for God’s promise of an heir to be fulfilled.  Despite having heard directly from God on the subject, they still took matters into their own hands.  They took advantage of a servant, Hagar, who became an unwilling surrogate for the child Sarai had not been able to bear.  When Hagar ran away because of Sarai’s cruelty, God met her in the wilderness and spoke tenderly to her there.  Let’s see what happens next in Genesis chapter 17.

Reflection Questions

1.  What did you see God do in this chapter?

2.  Why do you think God wanted Abraham to know that he was El Shaddai – God Almighty?

3.  Is there a circumstance in your life where you need to be reminded that God is Almighty?  Use the next few minutes to ask God to reveal Himself to you as El Shaddai.

I love a good recap.  It helps us remember where we’ve been and where we are in God’s story.  Over the last three weeks, we’ve heard about the creation story, the fall of mankind, the great flood, and the tower of Babel

We’ve seen God make two covenants with his people.  The first was to not destroy the earth with water ever again.  The second, was to a man named Abram.  God promised him land and descendants as numerous as the dust on the ground and the stars in the sky.  Let’s continue Abram’s story in Genesis 16.

Reflection Questions

1.  Have you ever been mistreated by someone? Have you ever felt invisible, or been tempted to isolate yourself from others?  What comes to mind when you heard Hagar’s story?  Did you remember a time when you were mistreated, felt invisible, or been tempted to run away?  How did you respond?

2. What did you see God doing in this passage?  What does that teach you about who God is?

3.  How might you need to respond today?

Thanks for listening this 16th episode of Coffee with Christ.  Don’t forget to leave a comment about the podcast in iTunes or wherever you listen.  Let’s invite someone to be changed by God’s word because it changes us verse by verse and chapter by chapter.
