Yesterday, was an interesting story.  Moses encountered God in the wilderness.  God told Moses that he had come down to rescue His people, and Moses found out he was the man for the job. But Moses felt inadequate for the task and questioned God.

God told Moses a lot of things in that conversation.  He told him who he was:  Yahweh.  He told him how everything was going to happen and that the elders would believe him, but Moses’s persisted.  While I’m reading Exodus chapter 4, pay attention to what God is doing, how He responds to Moses, and what they might teach us about how He is with us.

On the podcast today, we’ll read Exodus 4 Moses goes back to Egypt to tell them the good news that God has seen their suffering and is ready to act.

Reflection Questions

1.  What did you observe God doing in this chapter?  What does it teach you about who He is?

2.   In between Moses and Aaron meeting, there is this weird story about God trying to kill Moses because his son was uncircumcised.  If you’ve been with us since Genesis, do you recall what circumcision meant and the punishment for those who were not?  Look back at Genesis 17 if you need to.  Use these next few minutes to ask God what he might want you to know in light of this passage.

3.  Has there ever been a time when your situation seemed hopeless and miserable?  Did your struggle seem unseen or unnoticed by God?  What does this passage teach us about where God is when He seems far away?

In our last episode, we met Moses.  Moses’s life was in jeopardy from the very beginning.  He was born when Pharaoh was trying to kill all the baby boys in Egypt.  Ironically, he was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter when she found him floating in a little ark of a reed basket down the Nile River.

When he grew up, Moses knew he didn’t belong in Pharaoh’s household and he wanted to rescue his people who were enslaved.  After he kills an Egyptian who was abusing a Hebrew slave, two Hebrews rejected his efforts, so he ran away to Midian.

But Pharaoh continued to oppress God’s people and they cried out for help.  And at the proper time, God set things in motion to free his people.

Today in Exodus chapter 3….Moses encounters God in the wilderness, and God tells Moses that he is coming down to rescue His people and Moses learns he is the man for the job, but he feels inadequate for the task.

Reflection Questions

  1. Was this story familiar to you?  The wonderful thing about scripture is you usually will notice something new every time you read it.  What stood out to you today?
  2. What did God say to Moses?  What does that teach you about Him when you are hurt or struggling?
  3. How do you need to respond?

In our last episode, Exodus 1 picked up where the book of Genesis left off.  The Israelites went from 70 people who first entered Egypt with Jacob to a multitude of people who were extremely powerful.

Because of their numbers and their power, Pharaoh was threatened by them, so he tried to subdue them through brutal slavery.  But the more he oppressed God’s people, the more they multiplied.  Pharaoh wanted to kill the baby boys and when the midwives wouldn’t do it, he gave a command to throw them all into the Nile river.

Today on the podcast, we met Moses in Exodus 2.

After he killed an Egyptian who was abusing a Hebrew slave, two Hebrews rejected his efforts, so he ran away to Midian.

But Pharaoh continued to oppress God’s people and they cried out for help.  And at the proper time, God set things in motion to free his people.

Reflection Questions

  1. First, a Hebrew living as an Egyptian.  Then, an Egyptian living in Midian.  Moses never felt like he belonged.  How can you relate?  Think of a time in your life where maybe you didn’t feel like you quite fit in.  How can that experience help you see Moses in a new way?
  2. Even in his younger years Moses had a heart for rescuing his people.  What Does that mean to you?
  3. Where do you see evidence of God’s hand?  What does it teach you about who He is?

Today on the podcast, we catch up with the Israelites 400 years after the last chapter in Genesis.

Life had become bitter, but nothing escaped God’s attention.

Reflection Questions

  1. Take a few minutes to recap the story in your own words.  What happened?  Who did what?
  2. While God’s name isn’t mentioned much in this chapter, were do you see him at work?
  3. The enemy of the Israelites was systematically trying to weaken God’s people by oppressing them, making their lives bitter with hard work and ruthless demands, and by destroying those who would be the strongest among them.  As God’s people, we have the same enemy.  How does our knowledge of God help us fight?
