So far this season, we’ve caught up with the Israelites from where we left off in Genesis and seen God’s faithfulness to His word and His covenant with Abraham back in Genesis 15.

We met a man named Moses who had a heart for rescuing God’s people, the Israelites.  Moses’s story was complicated, but God chose him to rescue His people out of the land of their slavery and lead them into a land of abundance – The Promised Land.

After 400 years of oppression – right on time based on God’s promise to Abraham back in Genesis – God moved on behalf of His people and rescued them.  He executed 10 plagues because one man refused to humble himself.  When God finally broke his heart, Pharaoh did, indeed, let God’s people go, but changed his mind and tried to chase them down with his whole army.  The Israelites thought they were trapped but God had a plan to fight for them and to take them through the Red Sea on dry ground.

Then, God leads His people to the wilderness – a place where He would test their faith after the miracles they saw Him do on their behalf.  But the struggles of having their basic necessities, like food and water, eclipsed all the miracles.  So, God miraculously and supernaturally provided for them with bread in the mornings, meat in the evenings, and water in the most unlikely of places.  God gave the Israelites a chance to be in His Presence, to hear directly from Him, but they were afraid of His power and were too terrified to go.  So, Moses went on his own.

Last week, we heard what God told Moses during his time on the mountain of God.  God made a covenant with His people and they provided to be obedient.  To commemorate the occasion, God had a feast with Moses and some of the elders.  When He called Moses to come up higher, Moses went.  Let’s see what happens next in Exodus chapter 26.

Reflection Questions:

1.  After hearing that much detail, what does this teach you about God’s character?

2.  Did you imagine the tent God was drawing in your mind’s eye?  Did anything stick out to you?

3.  How should you respond to God?  Are you confused?  Ask for clarification.  Are you bored?  Ask God to show Himself to you in a fresh way?

In our last episode,  Moses repeated the instructions God provided to the people of Israel. He built and alter and had a covenant ceremony where God’s people promised to do everything the Lord commanded.

Moses and some of the elders climbed up the mountain and saw God and were not destroyed.  They ate a meal with him to mark the covenant they made.

Then, the Lord, calls Moses higher up the mountain.  He puts Aaron and Hur in charge while he was away for 40 days and 40 nights.  Let’s see what happens next in Exodus chapter 25.

Reflection Questions:

1.  What specific articles from for the temple were laid out?

2.  What did you observe that surprised you or made you curious?

3.  What did you learn about who God is?

In our previous episode, we listened to instructions God provided to the Moses about the importance of being truthful, of helping people even if you don’t like them, of basically just doing the right thing.

We also heard about 3 festivals the Lord wanted the Israelites to celebrate:

A festival celebrating their release from captivity (Festival of Unleavened Bread which is also know as Passover)

A festival celebrating the first fruits of the harvest at the beginning of harvest season.  This festival is also known as the Festival of Weeks or Pentecost

And a festival celebrating the end of the harvest season.  This is also know as the Festival of Shelters, Tents or Festival of Tabernacle)

Chapter 23 closed out with God’s promising His presence through an angel that would protect, lead, and drive out their enemies.

Reflection Questions

  1. Recap the story in your own words.
  2. Imagine you are Moses, what did you experience?
  3. Imagine you are the people down the mountain, what do you think is happening?
  4. Who do you identify with the most in this passage?
